How do I access the android files from PC using usb
With PTP mode, the phone is seen as a digital camera. This is working Out Of The Box under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. But, you can only access DCIM directory of your device.
With MTP mode, the phone is seen as a multimedia device where you can access the complete exported filesystem. But it doesn't work Out Of The Box under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. It needs some setup and configuration to work.

If you are running Android 4, the phone will by default switch to MTP or PTP mode. From personal experience I've learned that MTP does not work very well at times, as it can make the device appear empty or report connection problems. To use USB storage mode, do the following: 1) Make the sure the phone is NOT plugged into the computer 2) Go to Settings->More Settings->USB Utilities->Mass storage mode 3) Connect the USB cable 4) Click on 'Connect USB storage'

I finally found the menu I was looking for, well hidden as a tiny "more options" (3 dots) button within the "Storage" overview screen.

The folder contents could not be displayed. Sorry, could not display all the contents of "Nexus 7": DBus error
After 12 hours of struggling with this issue, including a support ticket from Google, and a full reset of my phone, I was able to resolve this issue by finding and using the original cable that came with the phone. Seems the standard mini usb cable will charge the phone fine, but data seems to not work... I hope this helps others with this issue.
